Good Enough Part I

“Joseph, can you hear me?”

“Open your eyes,” she says as I flinch underneath the white lights surrounding me. Their strobe-like starbursts blind my sight and offer few clues as to my whereabouts. “Stay grounded.”

The expression on my mother’s face shows a dedicated love, a wholesome fulfillment, and an outstanding fortitude.

“Am I dead?”

“Do you think you are dead?” she whispers rhetorically. “I mean Joe; you are young and healthy. Or you were until you slipped.”

“Is Natalie here?” With her gauzy train floating behind her, I watch her spin in circles. “Natalie?”

“What are you doing here, Joseph?” she says, simmering with a cool seducing lure. “I didn’t think you would make it.”

“You don’t belong here, son,” Dad scolds harshly. “I suggest you get back where you belong and do what you set out to do. Keep your shit together.”

“Ahh…yeah,” I acknowledge. “Seems Jacob got his shit together, too.”

"I was only ever going to get her back if I cleaned up my act, asshole,” Jacob hisses as the challenge of his grip on my biceps aches to the point of exploding. “I love Natalie.”

“You never loved Natalie,” I spar, fighting with words as I cannot feel my fists.

“But I did,” Dr. Blum says. “I loved her for a very long time. Long before you came into the picture Joseph, I chose Jacob for my daughter. And you deserve every bit of the misery you are in.”

The voices come out of nowhere, confusing my mind, and jostling my memories. “I need you all to shut up! Shut up! Just shut up!”

Time is relative as we are trapped in the current state of our cage. To some, it could seem like days and others an eternity, but as I try and make sense of it all, I become lost, afraid, and scared.

Rejected by my demons and tormented on the sole belief that I alone caused this nightmare. I made this horror happen. My mother is dead because of me. My father is dead because of me. Natalie is dead because of me. And Jacob is a hero—how is this fair or righteous or in anyway?

“Natalie was mine,” I snap, refusing to acknowledge their barking. “She will forever be mine. In life. In death. For all eternity. I stake my claim and put my name on her.”

“Your name means nothing anymore,” Dr. Blum argues with a cackle. “Who are you anyway—a Melton, a Bianchi, a half-assed mess of a man who doesn’t deserve my daughter?”

“What right do you have to judge me?”

“I have every right,” he says callously. “Natalie is my daughter.”

Filling with hatred, I interject, “And she is my wife.”

“Was…she is dead now,” he says with conviction. “Dead and gone and it is your fault—You, Joseph. You left her out in the rain, and she washed away. She disintegrated before your very eyes. This is your fault Joseph Walter Melton Bianchi-whoever-the-fuck-you-are. You took my daughter, and now you will pay for all of time.”

“I didn’t take your daughter.”

“Maybe you should have,” Dad says, nudging my shoulder with a smirk.
